Himlung Himal Expedition 2020(7126m)

Trip Duration: 27 Days    |   Activity: Expedition

Himlung himal camp three

Himlung Himal is now a classic summit with a lot of expedition every autumn and spring season too, then we will be sure not alone.
Himlung is one of the most accessible 7000 in Nepal, but not the easiest. Putha Hiunchuli in South Dolpo is technically more simple but more complicate and expensive to organize. The trekking from Koto, on the Annapurna circuit, is superb and provide a good acclimatation with some days in Phu to discover the landscape of the Nepal Himalaya’s and the life of this remote place in a Tibetan cultural sphère.

The climb start without difficulty up to camp 3 in a high mountain scenery, but the last day is long and straightforward. The snow slope of the west ridge (around 30 to 35°) need really good skills in mountaineering. You need to by very safe on your crampons, in particular during the descend after the summit.

And this is why we organize this expedition on a basis of « One by One »:
one Nepali climber for one foreign climber.
For more pleasure and safety…

We also would climb Himlung Himal in a continue style because after more than fifteen years of experiences we believe this is the less traumatic way to climb the Himalayan high summit, with a good opportunity to be well acclimatize and the pleasure of a deep immersion in high altitude.
Climbing with main rope on a glacier is also our credo in mountaineering as our culture is the alpine style with a real guiding relationship and a close proximity between the climbers, for more safety.

Mount Himlung

Himlung himal expedition 2020 by Himalayan Travelers

The Himlung has become, over the years, the summit of 7000 essential in Nepal, for who wants to confront the high altitude.
But this is not an easy summit.
It is a beautiful summit and its approach is ideal; progressive to allow a good acclimatization, but also cultural. The villages of Phu and Naar are really typical of Tibetan space.

Himalayan Travelers now organizes the Himlung climb each year, in the spring or fall. With two peculiarities: the continuous progression and a "one by one" frame, ie a Nepali guide per participant.

  • Hard not to have heard about the Himlung.
  • Difficult not to know that we know this summit particularly well, as there are pages of my site that speaks and for a very long time (2002!).

  • There are the details of the approach walk, with also all the links to the pages of my site that deal with the Himlung

  • and an explanation of the continuous progression.
  • "The chronicles of the Himlung" also reflect the reality of an ascent to the Himlung, in the same period in 2019.

Technical details

Technical level.
The Himlung is definitely not an easy summit and its normal route from Camp 3 can be PD + side in snow with a slope at 35/40 ° whose exposure is important. Of course, especially hard or icy snow.

The ascent of the Himlung therefore requires a real experience in mountaineering to be comfortable in this style of slope (where any slipping is forbidden), with a very good physical form, because the effort is important and takes place in altitude.
To illustrate this style of skill, it is not easy to find equivalent races in the Alps, especially now that snow races are becoming less and less frequent.
I propose you:

  • The Coolidge corridor at Pelvoux .
  • The Middle Glacier to the Aiguille d'Argentière
  • The crossing of Lyskamm
  • The crossing of Mont Blanc

A list of your climbs in the Alps is required.
Having achieved the ascent of 6000 in the Himalayas is of course advisable.
Good physical fitness is obligatory.

Altitude food
Each participant takes care of his altitude food, which should be packaged in the best possible way every day. Some of it can be bought in Kathmandu in a supermarket (Nepali style) close to the hotel.
Altitude food is a very personal element of a Himalayan expedition that has to be adapted to its own needs, both energetic and palatable. It is already very difficult to eat properly in the hypoxic conditions of high altitude and even more when the food is not adapted to our tastes. We will discuss this subject during the preparation.
It is therefore necessary to take the time in Franceto choose this altitude food to be able to buy the meals for eight days above the advanced base camp (the French Camp), to condition them as well as possible and of course to prepare them on the spot.
It is possible to work individually or in pairs.

The stoves and gas cartridges
They are provided by Himalayan Travelers, everyone takes care of his cover without forgetting lighters.
Each tent will be completed by two stoves. One to melt snow (an MSR Reactor) and a classic burner with two pans for cooking. With course, the gas cartridges needed.

Pharmacy
Each participant takes care of his pharmacy, trekking and altitude. You can consult the IFREMMONT website for more information on this subject.
The Nepalese team has an oxygen cylinder for medical use and a satellite phone in case of a serious problem requiring evacuation.
It is not possible to use this phone for personal use.

Insurance
Himalayan Travelers does not offer cancellation insurance.
Each participant will have to provide accurate information on his mountain insurance, covering the costs of helicopter evacuation.

In case of early return to Kathmandu
Whatever the reason, all the costs of this return and additional stay in Ktm are to be paid directly on site.

Outline Itinerary:

The itinerary of this Himlung Expedition is classic, but the way to do it is specific to Himalayan Travellers.

1... After the expedition meeting and a night at Padma Hotel or Hotel Mandala, we will stay a day around Boudhanath to finish the paper process and pack all our equipment.

2... An  early start in the morning and two days of travel by bus and jeep to Besisahar and Koto. Not really a pleasant time !

3… The trek to Naar and Phu and then Base Camp will take 7/8 days, with a rest day in Phu for a better acclimatization.

4… We will not stay a lot at Base Camp because we are in a continue style moving. Also, we don’t build a super confortable camp with full of unnecessary services. Just the right things we need.

5… Above French Camp, the climb really starts at camp 1. This will be an important base for us, because the transition between rock and glacier is not so easy and change every year. and we will have camp 2 and camp 3.
I don’t like the upper way in rocky slope with mostly fixed rope and if possible, we will use the glacier track with main rope.

6… Generally, after the summit, we sleep again in Camp 3. And we move to Kari Kobler BC just the next day and direct.

7…After packing and cleaning at BC, the way down is quick & fast.  Because we got to  go home !

8… We will be  in Kathmandu  very soon and at Padma Hôtel for a last dinner in front of the big Stupa.

Welcome back.
